Freeport Nautical Mile
If you’re new to town, then you must spend a day exploring Freeport’s famous promenade, which is dotted with antique lamp posts and runs beside the famous marina known as The Nautical Mile. Snack at a casual clam shack or dine on oysters at one of the fine restaurants overlooking the beautiful harbor packed with luxury yachts.
There’s a waterside park, Sea Breeze, which offers plenty of space to stroll or rest by the water. And if you grow tired of merely watching the boats, you can hop on board a yacht yourself for a romantic sunset cruise.
Luna Park in Coney Island
If you have kids, why not take them along to enjoy the fantastic fairground rides at Luna Park in nearby Coney Island. With over 50 top-notch rides and attractions, you can spend a whole day there. Between rides, you can snack on traditional fairground fare like hotdogs, pizza cones, and cotton candy.
Perhaps the most iconic Coney Island attraction is the Circus Sideshow. Once you’ve been wowed by the world-class performers, visit the adjacent museum, which lays out the colorful history of the circus and the whole eventful fairground.
Fire Island
Take a guided tour of the famous Fire Island, the state’s only federal wilderness preserve. Explore the sweeping dunes of the 26-mile long stretch of Long Island coastline, while your park ranger guide explains how and why the barrier island is of such importance. You can even take your tour in a canoe. Before you leave, be sure to climb the 1858 Fire Island Lighthouse, to enjoy the panoramic views from its top.
Oheka Castle
This immense, elegant 115,000-square-foot structure was once the country’s second-largest residence. With the appearance of a classic French Chateaux, Oheka Castle is a fascinating place near Freeport to explore, including its extensive landscaped gardens.
You can have a guided tour, dine on champagne and strawberries in the restaurant, and even stay overnight if you can afford it. Now named the Oheka Castle Hotel and Estate, this luxury hotel offers a very special accommodation experience for a few lucky visitors.
Eisenhower Park
At 930 acres in size, the Eisenhower Park is even bigger than Central Park and has just as much to offer in amenities. You can enjoy a day of sports, playing golf, miniature golf, basketball, baseball, soccer, and more. The Nassau County Aquatic Center is famous for the champion swimmers who’ve trained in its lanes, and a must-see for avid swimmers.
There’s a lot of fun to be had in the park for children, with large playgrounds filled with equipment, indoor and outdoor skating rinks, and countless perfect picnic spots. If the weather’s good, this nationally-famous park really can’t be missed.
