Situated directly at the point where the migrating schools begin to move into the estuary system of Long Island south shore. There are plenty of excellent fishing spots to get in on the action dotted along the coast, here are four of the best. 1. Jones Beach And Inlet One of the best boat fishing grounds to start with is Jones Inlet, where shoals of bass are likely to be hunting around the narrow estuaries. Keep a lookout for diving birds that reveal the location of the bunker shoals; the bass are sure to be nearby. more If you don't have your own boat, you can still rely on the many fishing piers around the Jones Beach State Park, which is well equipped with numerous tackle shops and facilities nearby. Otherwise, there are plenty of charter companies around the area that will allow you to rent a boat for the day, meaning anyone can get out on the water. 2. Lake Ronkonkoma Located just a short 40-minute drive from Freeport lies Lake Ronkonkoma, one of Long Island's largest and best-known fishing lakes. Although most of the lake is less than 15 feet deep, parts of it can stretch down to 65 feet, unusually deep for the Long Island area. You can expect to find mostly large and smallmouth bass here, as well as the recently stocked walleye and the overly numerous perch. There is plenty of access to the lake with a fishing pier located at the north end of the lake and plenty of parking lots and facilities nearby that offer everything you need. 3. Robert Moses State Park One of the best surf fishing places nearby, Robert Moses State Park, which is situated to the east of Freeport about 25 minutes drive away, is an excellent place to fish for Fluke and Bluefish. If surf fishing isn't your thing, then there are many piers along the waterfront to cast your line from instead. It's worth noting that you will need a permit to fish here, but fishing is permitted year-round. The park is also a great place to night fish, and specific night fishing permits can easily be bought from the park office. 4. Hempstead Lake State Park If you're looking for somewhere a little more family-friendly to take the kids, then the nearby Hempstead Lake State Park is a great option. The two ponds, South Pond and Macdonald Pond are regularly stocked with trout every fall. You can expect to find bass, perch, carp, and sunfish here as well. The New York State Park Department runs a series of fishing clinics for youngsters here all through the year, and there are plenty of playgrounds and other activities throughout the park to keep kids entertained, making it one of the best places nearby to bring the family.
