Thanks to its geographical location, it is an excellent place from which locals and visitors can go on memorable camping trips to beautiful spots in the surroundings. Whether you are looking for a dispersed campsite or a serviced area with electric plugs, showers, and drinking water, these are some of the best places you can visit for a great natural escape.

  1. Nickerson Beach Park and Campground

Spanning an area of more than 150 acres and featuring one of the most beautiful beaches in Long Island, the Nickerson Beach Park and Campground welcomes visitors with different outdoor activities and a family “Fun Zone” featuring new playgrounds, volleyball and basketball courts, a baseball field, and a skate park. This seaside park also offers swimming pools, cabanas for rent, and excellent campgrounds equipped with drinking water, electric plugs, and showers.

Getting to the Nickerson Beach Park and Campground from Freeport takes less than 15 minutes by car, driving a distance of just 7 miles along Meadowbrook State Parkway and Loop Parkway. Visitors to the park are allowed to swim in the ocean between 9 am and 6 pm when lifeguards are on duty. The access to the beach and a series of public showers are located not far from the main campground.

  1. Blydenburgh County Park

Located a little over 30 miles east of downtown Freeport, the Blydenburgh County Park can be reached in less than 40 minutes by car, driving along the Northern State Parkway. This county park features 630 acres of territory and is open all year round for outdoor activity enthusiasts, as well as families and groups of friends from the area. The place features 50 tent and trailer campsites equipped with showers, dumping stations, public toilets, grills, and other facilities.

The Blydenburgh County Park has become an excellent weekend destination thanks to the many activities and sports that can be played on its premises. Anglers can try their luck at the Stump Pond in the center of the park, while hikers can check out one of the different trails going around its territory. Other popular activities include boating, canoeing, swimming, fishing, picnicking, and birdwatching. All visitors must purchase a daily usage pass at the entrance of the park.

  1. Floyd Bennet Field

Although an airfield is probably not the first place you would think of for setting up your tent, the Floyd Bennet Field is an exception. Located on a plot of more than 1,000 acres, this airfield has been divided into an active and a natural area, the latter being transformed into a recreational facility that currently accommodates a marina, a golf driving range, and a public campsite. Getting here from Freeport takes just 40 minutes by car.
